MVIS goes the extra mile to raise money for Sands

Two Matlock transport technology firms are helping an employee to support those affected by stillbirth and neonatal death, following the tragic stillbirth of his son, Caleb George, earlier this year. A team from Brookfield Industrial Estate-based

Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) and its sister company, Bartco UK, is running 100km in ten months in order to raise money for the charity Sands. Last summer, the firms’ warehouse and

manufacturing supervisor Tom Hooton and his partner Ciara Smith, who live in Chesterfield, faced every parent’s nightmare, when Caleb George was stillborn. As the couple dealt with their devastation, Tom

discussed with General Manager, Anne Ashman, how they would cope, and together, they felt that it may help if they were able to use their heartbreaking experience to support others. The colleagues decided to raise money

for Sands, which is helping Tom and Ciara during this period. The charity works in partnership with health professionals to care for bereaved families, also funding research. The 100km in ten months project was

devised, as the pair - along with friends and family – committed to each run a 10km event every month for 10 months.

Tom said: “Stillbirths happen more you think, and

there is very little after-care for the bereaved. We’re lucky to be receiving wonderful support from Sands, and want to help it to be able to give this to others too, and to undertake its vital research.” The team hopes to raise a total of £5,000.

Citizens Advice strengthening links to business

In its 30th year in Chesterfield, Citizens Advice, which first opened its doors after war was declared in 1939, is strengthening its links to business in the local area. Today there is a network of local

Citizens Advice centres throughout the East Midlands, offering vital, relevant advice. Today’s advice topics may have changed - with debt and money worries, employment insecurity, changing circumstances such as ill health, relationship breakdown and bereavement high on the agenda - but Citizens Advice remains as relevant as ever. Last year, Chesterfield Citizens

Advice helped people manage debts exceeding £4.7m and supported them to obtain financial outcomes worth £5.7m. Over 6,000 local people were

assisted from 31 locations including GP surgeries and children’s centres as well as the base in the heart of town. Each Citizens Advice is an independent local charity that has to find its own resources to thrive. For businesses considering a

social responsibility agenda, Citizens Advice is an option, be it a donation, sponsoring of an event or providing office equipment.
