resource pool,” added Mark, who has 20 years’ working in the automotive engineering services sector. “We work closely with our customers to help manage

their skills and experience peaks and troughs.” Fishbone Solutions has become an expert in rapidly

building and deploying engineering teams to help its customer base, including several luxury carmakers, to deliver programmes effectively and to very high standards. The company believes that both listening to and tailoring

its service to its clients’ specific requirements has increased the confidence within its customer base to undertake increasingly complex and important projects. In rail a similar picture is true, with talented engineers in

short supply. Fishbone believes the industry is reacting but not fast enough to keep up with demand. This demand is only likely to increase. The largest rail scheme in recent times, and the only new

railway line in over 100 years, High Speed Two (HS2), is investing part of the total £55bn in SMEs such as Fishbone to provide the engineers, technology solutions, innovation, and networks needed for these projects for the entire life cycle of the railway, to ensure the full benefits are realised for the UK. Fishbone has recognised that not all customers want or

need the same delivery model. The company offers its customers a turnkey project delivery approach that is scaled to meet the needs of each project, through to fully- managed services delivered on a programme level. “The turnkey or transactional delivery approach could be

a couple of days’ support up to a couple of years. The fact that the costs and deliverables are defined up-front, the client knows exactly what they will get for their money,” said Edward. Both Mark and Edward understand that the model is dependent on the ongoing development of engineering and technical staff within the Fishbone team, with the continued shortage of engineers resulting in competition and increased costs for the industry.

Fishbone Solutions has developed an innovation station,

a repository of knowledge and know-how gathered to inform and lead its service delivery. “Our customers need us to work innovatively to ensure delivery. We call this the ‘Partnership approach,” said Mark. The UK Rail Industry is experiencing a period of growth

with not only the refranchising of existing rolling stock assets, but with the largest new-build order book for decades. With rail infrastructure delivery as well as rolling stock engineering, Fishbone Solutions is uniquely placed to provide services across the sector. Automotive production in the UK is at record highs and

with low carbon, autonomous and connected cars driving evermore demanding engineering requirements, the evolution of vehicles is accelerating to meet people’s expectations. Fishbone Solutions is developing its engineers and

project managers to provide bespoke, flexible services to meet the transportation sector’s ever-increasing skills and experience gap.

‘The industry is reacting but not fast enough to keep up with demand. With programmes such as Cross Rail 2, HS2 and the Digital Railway, this demand is only likely to increase’
