Visit Wales tells us that there are 641 castles in Wales. Compared to, say mighty Caernarfon or Harlech, Roch Castle is quite small, but it’s perfectly formed, and – more to the point – perfectly preserved. Definitely out are draughty corridors, damp rooms and medieval plumbing. Norman in origin, the castle was reconstructed just over 100 years ago. Today, it has a new lease of life as a unique heritage property dedicated to warmth and luxury, not warfare. Its D-shaped tower, perched on a pinnacle of rock overlooking St Brides Bay, is approached by an immaculate driveway – a harbinger of things to come. Within, robust Roch Castle is cool and contemporary, smooth and stylish, intimate and welcoming. Classy details abound, from the heraldic plaque to subtle lighting, arched doorways
to designer staircase, chunky furnishings to exclusive ceramics and tapestries. The luxury bedrooms are something else. Roch Castle doesn’t go in for creaky old four-posters.
