Visit Wales tells us that there are 641 castles in Wales. Compared to, say mighty Caernarfon or Harlech, Roch Castle is quite small, but it’s perfectly formed, and – more to the point – perfectly preserved. Definitely out are draughty corridors, damp rooms and medieval plumbing. Norman in origin, the castle was reconstructed just over 100 years ago. Today, it has a new lease of life as a unique heritage property dedicated to warmth and luxury, not warfare. Its D-shaped tower, perched on a pinnacle of rock overlooking St Brides Bay, is approached by an immaculate driveway – a harbinger of things to come. Within, robust Roch Castle is cool and contemporary, smooth and stylish, intimate and welcoming. Classy details abound, from the heraldic plaque to subtle lighting, arched doorways

to designer staircase, chunky furnishings to exclusive ceramics and tapestries. The luxury bedrooms are something else. Roch Castle doesn’t go in for creaky old four-posters. Its bedrooms are style personified, functional and very fashionable. The duvets, pillows, linen and beds are of the highest quality with Sealy mattresses and hypoallergenic toppers, while the Philippe Starck bathrooms come with Roch Castle’s own-brand luxury toiletries. The bespoke service includes breakfast of fresh local produce, laundry and daily housekeeping. It’s an indulgent bolthole for couples and also perfect for exclusive use by larger groups (private dining is available for the latter). There’s also an honesty bar. It’s the ideal location for exploring all of Pembrokeshire and is the sister property to Penrhiw Hotel, another Little Place.
