The house is set in rolling farmland surrounded by mature Welsh trees and a patchwork of tiny fields, it would be impossible not to unwind here. Rhedyn, which took three painstaking years to restore to its former glory, was originally a Forester’s cottage, built in the mid-1800s, with much of that character retained. It’s a special place to stay, seamlessly mixing modern and contemporary design with traditional warm Welsh hospitality, cosy and sumptuous accommodation and locally sourced food. Much of it travels just metres from their own kitchen garden. In each of the three bedrooms you’ll discover little extras, deep king-size beds, wrap around duvets, monsoon showers and silent fridges with fresh milk for your morning coffee. Muiread and Ciaran are justifiably careful to minimize the impact on the environment, they recycle, use sustainable local produce, and you can even charge your electric car here.

If sense of place and provenance is your thing, Soulton Hall will immerse you in well over a thousand years of it. The earliest known owner of the manor is in 1017, but the Soulton Hall estate is home to Bronze age earthworks and a Roman Road. The present hall, remodelled in 1556, and has been sympathetically restored by its caring custodians, the Ashton family, but remains very much intact. Their commitment to sustainability extends to solar power and ground source heating, maintaining the toasty warm house for future generations. The rooms are as spacious as they are varied. Take your pick from the historic rooms in the main house, think mullioned windows, ancient oak floors, wood panelling and secret doors, or perhaps you’d prefer the short walk past the walled garden to the Garden Rooms. The home farm drives the menu content, and local produce, cooked with flair and skill, is to the fore in the Elizabethan candlelit dining room.
