This charming Victorian country house couldn’t be better located for exploring southern Snowdonia. Not that you have to travel at all to enjoy its surroundings. Afon Rhaiadr loosely means the ‘house by the river and waterfall’. And, indeed, there is a waterfall (and pool) within the beautiful grounds accessible by a woodland walk. Luxuriant outdoors are paired with luxurious interiors. Plushly decorated and furnished throughout, with chandeliers and an eclectic mix of Victorian and Edwardian antiques, Afon Rhaiadr remains true to its roots. Sumptuous bedrooms come with gleaming bathrooms, there’s a conservatory and cosy drawing room, and dinner (by prior arrangement) is served in a candlelit dining room. The gardens, with plentiful seating, are a joy – just the place for an alfresco afternoon tea. Dolgellau is only three miles away, and many of Snowdonia’s classic sights and attractions are on the doorstep.

12 The Great Little Places Guide 2017

Here’s another uplifting success story. Derelict for almost seven years, this Grade II listed 18th-century country inn has been reborn. It’s all down to the energy and enthusiasm of owners Leigh and Mari. Working with architects, they have retained much of the character of the original building. The tastefully designed bedrooms have exposed beams plus king-sized beds, Egyptian cotton bedlinen, big-screen TVs and handmade oak furniture, adding contemporary touches you’d not necessarily associate with a small country inn. The dining room is fast gaining a reputation for its food, most of which is locally sourced. Fruit, vegetables and salads are home grown when in season and meat directly from local farms is always a firm favourite with locals. The inn, in the north-west of the island, is well located for many Anglesey attractions, including sandy beaches, the coast path, golf and fishing.
