Plas Dinas is unmistakably someone’s home. The house was the former home of the Armstrong-Jones family (a family whose best-known member is Lord Snowdon, former husband of Princess Margaret) but is now run by your friendly hosts Neil and Marco Soares- Baines. There’s new life – and fresh comforts – to this fine old building. Family portraits, books and other memorabilia, especially in the Gun Room, give the house a character that couldn’t possibly be manufactured. The bedrooms are plushly appointed and attention to detail is evident everywhere down to little touches such as fresh milk for your cup of tea. The beautiful gardens, wooded grounds and lodge are another attraction, along with the house’s location on the outskirts of Caernarfon close to the town’s World Heritage castle, narrow-gauge Welsh Highland Railway and the mountains of the Snowdonia National Park.

The ‘North Wales Riviera’ needs places like this one. Plas Rhos is so much more than just a Guest House, it’s a warm, airy, immaculately cared for Victorian home. Your hosts, Susan and Colin Hazelden are experienced hoteliers, and have owned Plas Rhos for 14 years. Their passion for people is clear, the house is relaxed and carefully maintained. The five rooms are all individually furnished, all decorated with soothing colour schemes and sparkling newly fitted en-suites. For the full coastal Riviera experience treat yourself to the eponymous Bay View Room, complete with its indulgent walk-in shower, spectacular antique half tester bed and panoramic sea views from the expansive bay windows. Expect pampering toiletries, flat screen digital TVs, proper coffee and luxury soft furnishings. Colwyn Bay’s relaxed and laid back up market atmosphere makes it a perfect base for the more energetic adventure pursuits that Snowdonia offers.
