Here’s one of Aberaeron’s oldest and most impressive houses – and that’s saying something for a harbour town famous for its Georgian-style architecture. Llys Aeron is full of character, with well-proportioned rooms, plenty of space and a pleasing marriage of classical and contemporary design cues. This luxury guest house is a perfect base for exploring Ceredigion’s coast and country, where dolphins swim in the clear waters of Cardigan Bay, sheep nibble contentedly on lush, green farmlands, and red kites soar over the mountains. After exploring compelling ‘Wild Wales’, return to the civilised charms of relaxing, spotless and sympathetically refurbished Llys Aeron, where breakfasts are cooked in the Aga and well equipped bedrooms boast luxurious Egyptian cotton linen, individually designed bathrooms, fresh flowers and flat screen TVs. Downstairs there’s a large conservatory and walled garden, complete with hydrotherapy hot tub.

30 The Great Little Places Guide 2017

Don’t be confused by the postal address. Plas Uchaf is very much part of the Tanat Valley, one of the loveliest gateways into Wales. This is bucolic border country at its finest, where sheep and cattle graze on green, green grass and nothing disturbs the peace and pace of rural life. Plas Uchaf, a handsome 18th-century red-bricked house, is a haven of hospitality, with bedrooms bursting with personality and warmth. Elegant and graceful in a mix of crisp and classic styles, they come with super king-size, king-size or twin beds – and luxury Myddfai toiletries. All rooms have stunning views across the Tanat Valley – for the ultimate hideaway ask about the Garden Room, a dinky stand-alone property 30m from the main house. Plas Uchaf is as restful as they come – but you’ll definitely want to make the most of a host of local outdoor activities and places to visit, including National Trust castles, Lake Vyrnwy and Offa’s Dyke.
