Page 34 Time for pruning and planting

Well things should at least start to warm up and you will start to see your garden bouncing back into life as we enter spring.

For those of you who regularly read the article you will know that now is the season to prune properly as the chance of cold weather is less likely, and as was proven we can get cold weather as we saw, when certain parts of the Costa Blanca got a good coating of snow at the end of January. This is why I always want you to prune later. Secondly the response of the plants will be quicker as they are drawing sap which they don’t when pruned in the middle of winter.

I just wanted to touch on a recent news story about artificial grass on Sky news, when they talked about artificial football grass and its infill being potentially detrimental to health. I had already heard about the story as I have family living in Holland where they discovered the problem.

As we are one of the largest suppliers and installers of artificial grass on the coast, I thought I would take the opportunity to set the record straight about our grasses. The problem has been discovered with the infill used (ground up old tyres) not the grass itself. We supply grass manufactured here in Spain using 100% non toxic materials and manufactured to ISO safety standards. When I say manufactured here, I mean we can go to the factory. There are a lot of companies who distribute grasses in Spain but they are manufac tured elsewhere. We are very proud of our selection of grasses and only use high quality products. There is of course a slightly higher cost than grass supplied by some of our competitors, as most of you know there are a lot of cheap grasses available on the market. The value of the grass is not only in the quality of the grass fibre itself (which is only something a more trained eye may pick out) but naturally in the quality of the materials used and the health and safety standards of production. None of our landscaping grasses require an infill and we only need a sand infill on some of our sports grasses. We actually have a football grass that was designed based around not needing an infill so this problem doesn’t exist for us. The bottom line is, as we all know, you get what you pay for. Our product is not only safer, it is of a higher quality, and then when you add the value of our nearly ten years of experience of dealing with artificial grass, you get a product that is delivered to you and installed in the correct manner.
