Page 33 What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine combines mainstream medical therapies with complementary and alternative therapies.

There are many different alternative medicines available for humans, and many of these are also available for your pets. Indeed for years we have been able to offer these combinations to our clients for their animals, and they are very happy with the results. And the pets are too! Here are some of the therapies we offer at the clinic and a brief explanation of how they work:

Physiotherapy combines exercise and massages to reduce inflammation and strengthen muscles. We do have an animal specialist in this field as obviously an animal’s constitution is slightly different to ours. It is very important to include physiotherapy after any traumatology surgery to achieve the ultimate result and the same for sport injuries. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine, it consists of using specific needles

in certain points of the body depending on the treatment required. Its origins date back around 2,500 years, with animals it should be practised by an animal acupuncturist. It is very helpful and works well combined with treatments for arthritis and other chronic inflammations as well as many other ailments. Natural medicine supplements, plant and herb extracts have been used for many years, and combined treatments allow for optimal recovery. They are commonly used in treatments for hepatitis, kidney failure and other long term illnesses, many plants and herbs have active ingredients that help strengthen internal organs and correct the malfunction in the body. Oligotherapy is a therapy that uses minerals in small quantities. We all have small amounts of minerals and these help with the natural functioning of the body. This is the same for animals, and by supplementing these minerals we can help with many different illnesses. Studies in rodents found using oligotherapy has actually increased life expectancy of their subjects. These findings show it is very important to complement certain treatments with integrative medicine, but always under a qualified vet. If you require any other information regarding integrative medicine or what we offer at the clinic please feel free to contact us. We offer Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Oligotherapy, Natural Medicine Supplements and Homeopathy at our clinic.

Another successful podenco rescue

After being warned by a concerned lady from Puerta Fenicia in Jávea, local dog rescuer and podenco lover Jacky from APASA started looking for the abandoned podenco that had given birth to puppies near the urbanisation. On the first search, she found 2 underweight, cold and coughing puppies in the woods. They were hiding between rocks, where they lived rough for weeks. Being around 5 weeks old, it was quite a surprise to find some puppies alive, having survived the snow and torrential rain we had. Immediately husband Arjan and friend Claire (Bar Mr. Punch) joined the search and the next day puppy number 3 was rescued. A trap was set to catch the mum podenco, but she was too smart. A new tactic (regular feeding and trying to get as close as possible) did the trick. After many days of lying on roads and in the bushes convincing mum to come near, Claire managed to catch her too! Mum and puppies are now being socialised and are recovering from their time in the woods. All can be adopted through APASA and are waiting for their forever homes.

He needs to get to know you first. For more information call 618 754 635 or visit www.apasa.eu.

Pinos, male, Podenco, DOB 05.2011 – 65cm. He was brought to us after living on the streets for a long time. He did not like the small pen he was put in but as soon as we found a companion for him he relaxed. Pinos is very friendly but will not come to anybody right away.
