teenagers.
The ears are made of cartilage and their shape comes determined by genetic factors, which in the case of protruding ears are non dominant. It is commonly agreed among specialists that the best age in terms of correction, is as early as at the age of six, as the cartilage is still young and flexible thus enabling a much better evolution and final result. The technique can still be performed at any age and is commonly carried out in older women who, as a girl covered their ears with hair until puberty, and then become more aware of the problem when they want to try different hair styles.
The technique takes about one hour and the patient is sent home afterwards. The operation is carried out under deep sedation plus local anaesthesia. An oval shape incision is made on the back of the ear exposing the cartilage.
The cartilage is then partially removed from its central part allowing the ears to fold naturally. Intradermal sutures fix the remaining piece of cartilage to the temporal bone at a fixed distance so that both ears will now fold naturally back with the tips at not more than 2-2,5 cm distance to the skull.
External sutures are placed to cover the incision for about 10 to 12 days and both ears are supported and covered with an elastic bandage for some 2-3 weeks until the cartilage has healed to the new shape.
There are many other procedures to deal with other ear deformities ranging from torn ear lobes or forms of skin cancer that must be assessed individually but with equal good results.
Protruding ears
