Page 27 The Costa Motoring... Simple checks that you can carry out on your own car.
You don’t need to be a fully trained mechanic to keep on top of your pride and joy so here are a few simple things that you can (and should) check yourself.
1. Check your oil. Most manufacturers make this simple for you to do yourself at home, just follow the instructions in your handbook or do a quick google search. There are many online videos you can watch to help you with this process or just call in and see us and we will show you. With many modern engines having relatively low oil capacities, the difference between full and low can be as little as a couple of litres so it is well worth keeping your eye on.
2. Check your coolant levels. As above, this is a simple but vital procedure, always top up with the correct coolant, and if suspiciously low seek advice from your mechanic.
3. Check your tyre pressures and the general condition of them. The only contact patch between your vehicle and the tarmac, a simple and regular inspection will not only prolong the life of your tyres, it will also save you money on fuel consumption and of course keep you safe on the road.
4. Look. It might sound obvious, however a regular inspection of your engine bay may just save you from an expensive repair bill. I know that most modern engines have plastic covers making it difficult to see everything, however a quick and simple inspection may help you catch a small leak before it causes any damage.
5. Listen. If you have a regular listen to your car, you will become familiar with what it should sound like. As above, a quick listen to your engine may help you spot the early signs of a failing bearing or a loose / slipping belt. Also taking your car for a drive without the stereo playing may help you spot an untoward noise. If your car starts to make a new / unfamiliar noise then it is worth getting it checked before it causes further problems.
None of the above are particularly difficult and are all good practice to help you protect your investment, if you would like any advice or would like us to show you how to do any of these things, please call in and see us and we will happily give you some guidance. In the meantime, stay safe on the roads, and don’t forget to call in and see us if you are thinking of changing your car or looking to sell your current vehicle. We will always offer you genuine and friendly advice and help you think through the many options available.
