Historic Happenings
Chester County is home to magnificent Longwood Gardens, a world-class horticul- tural treasure. Situated on 1,050 acres, Longwood features 20 indoor gardens as well as 20 outdoor gardens and a breathtak- ing conservatory. Built in 1919, the conser- vatory is one of the world’s great green- house structures; home to 5,500 types of plants. Outdoor gardens overflow with flow- ers and fountains.
After hours Longwood Gardens transforms into an ethereal event venue for meetings and social functions. The Terrace staff han- dles the on-site catering featuring fresh, regional ingredients such as mushrooms – a Kennett Square specialty. Summer of 2017 will herald the return of the Main Fountain Garden after a two-year, $90 million recon- struction. The new technology enables the fountain jets to rise as high as 175-feet and recirculate over 31,000 gallons of water each minute.
A rich history of iron and steel production, spanning 300 years in Pennsylvania, can be found in Chester County. Built in 1882, the Phoenixville Foundry is an architecturally stunning building on the banks of the French Creek. The industrial character of the build- ing’s exterior is largely intact while the fully renovated interior will provide a sophisticated and elegant atmosphere.
The space, which includes the Cupola Ballroom and Mezzanine, Foundry West Ballroom and The Heritage Center, is flexible and can accommodate one large or pro- gressive-style occasion for up to 500 guests, or multiple events separated by acoustical walls. The flexibility of the interior design makes the possibilities endless for cocktail receptions, sit-down dinners, interactive food stations, buffets and ceremonies.
The eastern pavilion, which houses the Schuylkill River Heritage Center, is a more intimate space that can stand alone for smaller groups or be packaged with adja- cent facilities for a more complex or larger event. Tenting of the Foundry’s exterior areas can add additional event space or provide even more flexibility for events.
