Oliva U3A Make a Smile

U3A Oliva held a big summer party recently and the proceeds of the raffle, 525€, were presented to the ‘Make a Smile’ charity in Relleu, which supports 24 young adults with severe learning difficulties and 10 children who have been removed from unsafe situations.

FF Serving the community since 1993

Although theoretically funded by Social Services, the unit has received no money recently, carers are unpaid and food supplies are permanently in crisis, so the work of the dedicated volunteers of this charity is vital. By a combination of fund raising and self-sufficiency projects they are doing an amazing job, producing and selling olive oil, eggs, and home grown vegetables from their extensive small holding, where the children and young adults live and help with the farm work and animals. The craft workshops for the young adults are equally inspiring, with all manner of recycled materials being converted into decorative and useful objects. It is a pleasure to visit the project, and we are looking forward to returning soon with a coach load of U3A members for a wonderful lunch provided from the local farm produce. Volunteers, sponsors and donations are always welcome, more information about the project can be found at www.makeasmile.es and about Oliva U3A at www.u3a-oliva.org.
