MOFTAG - Mighty Oaks
From Tiny Acorns Grow Moftag, a women’s club in Calpe, was formed 38 years ago to fulfil a very real need. In those days it was difficult for women to have a social life. Even after all the changes and over the years with the development of other groups Moftag is still very active. We hold monthly meetings on the second Wednesday in the month when there is usually a speaker. A monthly programme is devised by the committee and on many of these
activities, trips out, theatre visits, lunches etc we invite husbands or partners to attend.
Moftag is very proud of the fact that our aims are not just for our own entertainment. We work hard at raising money for charitable causes. Rather than give money we prefer to find out what is needed and buy it for them. Over the years we have bought a great variety of items ranging from equipment and toys for the Calpe Guarderia (nursery school), a new roof for one of the Emaús classrooms, uniforms for the handicapped children’s basketball team, life saving equipment for the Red Cross and school books for families struggling to manage. Since the recession at our monthly meeting we bring a donation for the Calpe Food Bank, after finding out what they need in the way of essential foodstuffs.
Twice a year Moftag holds a mini-market in the Delfin Square to raise money. We are well known for our home-made cakes, pickles, marmalades as well as other stalls. Our next event is on Saturday 19th November at 10.30am, you need to get there on time as things sell out quickly.
Some of our members have been with us since Moftag started, but many have joined over the years. New members are always welcomed. Just come along to one of the monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 3pm. The meetings are held in the Footlights Studio behind the Chinese Precio shop on Avenida Rosa de los Vientos near Cala Calalga. We shall be pleased to see you.
Donations over the last two years have totalled 5,595€ this has helped some of the following, the Food Bank 2,858€ and Gargasindi School swimming initiative 738€. Other recipients include the provision of school books, the Red Cross, the Maite Boronat Centre and Christmas presents for the residents in the Emaús Residential Home in Altea. The members discuss and agree who will receive a donation as needs change over time.
