House and Home

If so, then you can simply cut away the dead and the plant will re grow. Please bear in mind a little patience may be required as I understand deeply that you may not want to look at burnt plants, but before rushing to tear them out give them a little time and you may find they are a lot more unharmed than initially thought. Also wait for winter to pass as tender plants which are already damaged may be more prone to frost attack in coming winter months. Once you see green shoots coming back then prune away the dead or damaged and the plant will re-grow much quicker and far more rapidly and healthier than rushing to get new plants.

Obviously some palm trees were damaged also but in some places they intentionally set fire to the palm trunks to clean them, I wouldn’t, but it can be done. With Canary palms, similarly to the weevil care, keep an

eye on the centre growth if this is green and still vertical then you should be fine.

If sadly you have lost many plants and do need to re-plant my singular biggest tip is to prep your ground properly. There may have been a tree in a position for thirty years and now you want to replace it with the same but smaller version of the tree. This is fine but don’t expect instant results, the old tree had chance to get it roots down for many years and find all those pockets that retain moisture after rain etc. The best way to help new plants is to loosen the soil, if needs be, get a digger in, remove the old roots and stump and then dig as far down as you can regardless of pot size of the new plant, this means the ground is easy for those new delicate roots to get into, and remember they will need water until they start to establish themselves. The most important thing to remember is to look for green, green is life. Don’t rush, let winter get out of the way and wait for your plants to revive naturally. Nature will always find a way of making its way back. If you need any help with your plants to verify if they are OK or not and if they need replacing, we can help.
