LIFE

At the End of the Road with

Wayne Rostad In May of this year, my wife Bev and I were having dinner with friends,

Walt and Trudy Scott, at our house in Almonte. We were talking about our mutual friend, Wayne Rostad, who is now living somewhere in Eastern Shore, Nova Scotia. As we chatted, it became evident that we should pay a visit to our friend down east sometime over the summer. We came up with a date in July for a whirlwind trip that would last a total of six days with three days and nights with Wayne. Going back in time, my claim to fame with Wayne was in 1976, when I

was a young broadcaster in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, working an evening shift on a rock station CJCN. At that time, Bob Banfield and I were trying to break the Guinness World record for longest broadcast by two people. We lasted a week straight, but the only problem was that we forgot to tell Guinness about the event. Anyway, on the Sunday morning of the day we were to finish our broadcasting extravaganza, this big tall dude comes to the door of the radio station and tells us that as of the next day, Monday morning, we were going to start playing country music, and I was to follow Wayne’s morning show at 10 a.m. I told him I wasn’t going to play “Johnny Crash” or “Tammy Wynot”. Wayne said just give it a week and, for me, the rest is history! Over the years, our families became close - both in country music and

outside the business. For many years as a broadcaster at CKBY (I credit Wayne for getting me the job), I would MC at the Gatineau Clog for Wayne and we always stayed in touch. Wayne has been a great friend, and since he moved to Nova Scotia to build his home on the ocean, we haven’t seen much of him, except when he comes to the Valley to host a show or two. Walt met Wayne through some friends on the golf course, and they have been the best of friends for years as well, so it was only natural that the four of us should make the trip. Wayne, of course was the host of the well-known CBC produced show,

“On The Road Again”, a program that would last for 20 years from 1987 till 2007, and made Wayne a household name across Canada. So at 9 a.m. on July 12th, we set out to go and spend some time with

our friend. The Scotts supplied the car and we supplied the GPS, and it was apparent by the time we hit Orleans that the GPS was toast and we would have to stop for maps along the way to try and find Wayne. The ladies had made sandwiches and we had a car full of snacks and drinks, so all we would have to do is stop for gas. Our plan was to drive the first day to Edmunston, New Brunswick, and thank goodness we booked a hotel room ahead because most Ontario travellers stop in Edmunston on the way down east. It was a Tuesday, and our drive was trouble free – we took the Highway

30 bypass around Montreal and then up toward Quebec City. I am not sure how many times we said it, but the view around Quebec City to Riviere- De-Loup is unbelievable; with the Appalachian Mountains across the St. Lawrence River. After getting another map at the New Brunswick Welcome
