It left a trail of destruction, taking 44 lives and damaging Fiji’s economy. The minister emphasised the vital role of broadcasters in crisis situations and expressed his sincere hope that the ABU will help Pacific Island countries who already suffer the effects of climate change.

In his opening remarks the Acting President Mr Hikaru Doumoto, expressed on behalf of the ABU his deepest condolences to the victims of tropical cyclone Winston and pointed out that one of ABU’s priorities in the last several years is to support its members in the Pacific. The Acting President added that the ABU has organised the Pacific Media Partnership Conference-PMPC since 2010 as one of our primary goals, thus serving our Pacific Island members better. The ABU and the Councilors are grateful to the hosts, FBC and Fiji TV for their warm hospitality and all the arrangements made for the success of the 101st ACM in the beautiful city of Nadi.

The co-host of the AC, the Fiji TV offered the councilors a rare opportunity to visit several of the 330 beautiful islands of the country. After cruising around the councilors were able to sample the pristine turquoise water treasures of Fiji in a remote location and experience Fijian traditions in a local tribal ceremony. The ABU Vice President, Mr Jawhar Sircar was voted as a chief by his ABU tribe and has the honor of drinking the first cup of local brew cava with the local noblemen.

The next ACM is scheduled next October in conjunction with the ABU General Assembly in Bali, Indonesia.
