The progress made so far was presented at the 2016 ABU News Group Meeting held in Sydney, Australia from the 1 - 3 June and hosted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The three-day meeting saw the participation of 54 delegates from 27 AVN members. AVN partners and invited guests including those from ASBU, ARD Germany, Reuters, AP and AFP were also present.


The ABC’s Deputy Director of News, Craig McMurtrie and the ABU Secretary- General Dr Javad Mottaghi gave the welcome remarks. The meeting was conducted by the ABU News Group Chairman Joao Francisco Pinto of TDM- Macau. The AVN Centre presented its activity reports which highlighted some of the main developments that took place during the past year.

he Asiavision (AVN) news exchange program has always strived to achieve


The News Department Director and Head of AVN, Mr Chae Il elaborated on the main developments of the past year. He also spoke about plans in the near future such as expanding AVN training activities and increasing the number of news items exchanged, especially over the weekends. He called on AVN members to put in the effort to make the AVN news exchange more active during weekends.


The AVN Senior Editor Tan Hock Guan shared the results of the online survey conducted ahead of the Sydney meeting. Of the 30 AVN members, 24 took part, with the promising statistic that all members make use of the news items exchanged by AVN.


The final session on day one of the meeting was a closed session which was reserved for AVN members to deliberate on internal matters. The main topic discussed in the closed session was the AVN Reserves Fund which is currently held in deposits in a bank in Singapore. The News Group chairman Mr Pinto informed members that the AVN Reserves Fund will remain with the bank in Singapore for now.


The second day of the Sydney meeting


Mr Morris said that social media has become the primary source for people to get information in the digital era. He said there are massive third party platforms available today that enabled people to have wider access to news and information.


Earlier, Emma Turner, the ABC News Insights Manager and Bronwyn Boon, Analyst with ABC Audience Insights, co-presented on Australian audience research, media trends and the ABC.


There were also presentations by Alan Sunderland, the ABC’s Editorial Director, Fiona Reynolds, the Director of ABC Regional and Scott Kimpton, the Sales Manager of ABC Commercial.


Sascha Rundle, Manager Emergency Broadcasting & Community Development, in her presentation, highlighted the challenges faced in covering natural and man-made disasters. In emergency broadcasting, she said the aim is to help the public. This is when accurate and timely information needs to be disseminated. She said a broadcaster needs to work closely with, consult and engage the local authorities and emergency agencies before, during and after the event.


The third and final day of the meeting was a visit to the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) which runs one of the top journalism schools in Australia. UTS School of Communication, Professor of the Practice of Journalism Peter Fray was on hand to welcome the group and gave a briefing on the workings of his department.
