Effective communication and Sendai Framework


About ten panellists shared their views on the follow-up of the Sendai Framework in different countries of the Asia-Pacific region such as Thailand, Japan, Philippines, India and Myanmar.


A 90-minute long session was dedicated to the Sendai Framework for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction. Moderators Rajib Shaw of Kyoto University and Natalia Ilieva of the ABU recalled the importance of the Sendai Declaration which attempts to make the world safer over the next 15 years.


Japan at the forefront of Emergency warning


NHK is continuously improving its technologies for the dissemination of Early Warning (EW) for prompt evacuation in case of disasters. Japan, being a disaster-prone country, has a lot to share with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of disaster preparedness.


Toshiyuki Sato recalled that NHK-Japan has recently been recognised as IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Milestone. M. Iwaki, T Ozawa and T. Kuramata shared the experiences of NHK at different levels. The Japanese public broadcaster wants ‘Real Time Warning and Alerts’ and in collaboration with JMA – Japan Meteorological Association, it wants to make sure that all radio and television broadcast programmes are suspended and replaced by emergency news in case of disasters. NHK is also presently enhancing the use of Information Technology for disaster preparedness. Panellists at this NHK Masterclass session also spoke about the latest technologies to help disabled people in case of disasters. Here the focus is on speech recognition and the Sign Language CG System.


ABU honours the Best TV Documentaries Climate Change


The 2nd ABU Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction finished on a high note with the announcement of the winners in this year’s ABU Awards for Climate Change and DRR in Krabi, Thailand. The Award Ceremony was preceded by a colourful spectacle based on an old Thai legend. After the show and a moment of suspense, Mr Anothai Udomsilp, Director of the Academic Institute of Thai PBS and host of the Summit appeared on stage in regal attire to announce the winners. And they were: For the Best Programme on Climate Change the award went to Whispers Of Warming, produced by Mr Anoop Khajuria, DD, India. This is a compelling story about the life of people in the Himalayas who are on the frontline of climate change.


The Award for Best Programme on Disaster Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction was given to Together We Can Do It, BBC Media Action, Bangladesh. The producer Shihan Zuberi, conveys an optimistic view on the power of community working together to prepare for future disasters.

Ms Darin Klong - UkKara, Thai PBS, Thailand, won the Award for Most Promising Newcomer for Wave of Change, Tsunami Lessons from Three Countries.


The Award for Best Human Story went to the producer of Mission Arctic, NRK, Norway, Havard Gulldahl. The documentary follows the epic trek of four teenagers to the North Pole to see first-hand the consequences of climate change.


The 3rd ABU Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in May 2017.
