Preparing for Next Generation Broadcasting


The event led to the development of some policy guidelines based on the discussions. By observing current technological developments and trends, it is important that the appropriate technology is embraced at the right time including what procedures need to be followed. This enables organisations to optimise the utilisation of limited resources thus maximising benefits for the cost incurred in producing a programme.


Some broadcast stations may have a mix of cameras capable of producing SD or HD visuals. Noting that the majority of captures (Camera and Camcoders) are able to record/operate either in SD or HD format, the correct mode is to be selected in the camera during the porgramme planning itself. Certain selected programmes such as Documentary, Teledramas ,Operas and Musical Programes can be captured and edited in HD format. Until HD format transmission facilities are available, television content or programmes can be transmitted (over-the-air in form of terrestrial) in SD format by down converting HD content. This can be complemented by delivery over broadband (the Internet or public internet) when the broadcaster holds the rights for it either in HD format or SD format. The non-stationary logo of the station can be used as a watermark, which enables the recognition of misuse of specific content of a given station.

n in-country Training & Workshop on “Preparing for Next Generation Broadcasting”


was successfully completed with a wider participation of the SLRC – Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation officers from 19-22 April 2016. One hundred and sixty participants attended over four days in four different groups. Various challenges faced by the SLRC such as VOD, OTT, Interactivity, catch up and delivery to portable devices were discussed.


It is strongly recommended to use social media and to promote individual programmes that will lead to the promotion of the brand of the programme channel and the brand of the station. Promotions on the Internet & Social Media should be carried out from the planning stage to beyond the end of the series. Production staffs need to interact and engage constantly and consistently with the audience. A lack of regular and consistent use of social media results in poor efficacy.
