Musical Drive of the Heavy Horses returns

Making a nostalgic return to the Andrews Bowen International Arena is the Musical Drive of the Heavy Horses at Horse of the Year Show. The popular and emotive performance delighted audiences with their superb harrowing display from the 1950’s up until their last display at Wembley Arena in 1999. The Musical Drive was a tradition largely born out of necessity and it was Colonel Mike Ansell who solved the past lengthy disruptions between classes by using teams of majestic Shire Horses to harrow the arena instead of tractors. The Heavy Horse Teams performed the drive to music making it more entertaining for the audience, carefully choreographed from start to finish. The jingling of the harrow chains created by the heavy horse’s majestic footing is a harmonious

accompaniment to the military style drill music. The spectacle is reminiscent of the traditional driving tasks asked of heavy breeds on farms, in breweries and as modes of transport in a bygone era. This year at HOYS, teams of 6 pairs ranging from Shire to Clydesdale under the command of HOYS official John Peacock, are set to fascinate each day of the Show with two performances on Saturday and Sunday. The Musical Drive will re-enact the complicated patterns as performed at the Harringay and Wembley Arenas. With both The Shire Horse of the Year and The British Ridden Heavy Horse Championships taking place at Sunday’s Show, coupled with the addition of the Musical Drive, Sunday is a must for Heavy Horse enthusiasts. www.hoys.co.uk

Thelwell charms Hiho Silver

Hiho Silver has been granted an exclusive licence from The Thelwell Estate, to create a sterling silver jewellery range using Norman Thelwell’s well-known cartoons featuring fat ponies and little riders. “Thelwell is part of most equestrian childhoods as situations depicted will relate to anyone involved with horses,” said Emma Warren of Hiho Silver. “We love the fun of Thelwell’s drawings and we’re delighted we can now use these to create jewellery that will make people smile and remember fun, happy times.” “We feel very honoured to be working with Hiho, and look forward to a long and happy partnership,” said Karen Addison on behalf of The Thelwell Estate. www.hihosilver.co.uk

New social youth group launches in Cumbria!

Teenagers at Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, Cumbria, are the latest to form a Young Equestrians group; designed to provide informal social and training opportunities for people aged 13-18. The inaugural session enabled the young people to get to know each other and discuss what they want to achieve with their new club. Ideas included workshops on equine feeding, clipping, plaiting and biomechanics. The group also hopes to explore different aspects of the equestrian industry through taster sessions at different disciplines such as polocrosse and vaulting. Proprietor, Deana Tarr, was impressed with the young people’s enthusiasm: “I felt the

session has definitely been a hit; they can’t wait for the next one.” For the hands-on part of the afternoon, Deana and 21 year old Honor Fenton, a volunteer at the centre, introduced the group to lungeing. All participants enjoyed the opportunity to work with the horses on the ground, and plan to develop coaching skills through helping each other with their riding lessons. Ella Wadsworth said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to try something we may not learn in a normal riding lesson. I loved it!” Parent, Lynn Proctor, commented: “Young Equestrians is brilliant for my daughter’s confidence; she loved it and is looking forward to the next meeting and all at a low cost!” www.youngequestrians.club
