15mph Please!

Henry with his high viz gear from Equisafety on and me with mine, ready for a hack out!

Holiday allowing us to have a well earned day off (what day off?) we spent some time moving our show jumps out of the arena and into the field. Welcome to the world of jumping on grass for the rest of the season and not having to build courses and take them down every time we want to ride through a test in the arena. Well maybe! The show jumping course was duly built and looked great. We used it several times, as did our liveries and I taught a few course riding show jumping lessons too. Great! Then the ground dried out to something resembling builder’s concrete and we decided that jumping was simply no longer an option until it rained again. So, several of the more moveable jump wings and poles were transported back to the arena to at least give us an option to jump something. A month later, we’ve had no rain and the concrete jumping pad remains. Despite looking for somewhere else in our many fields to rebuild, with the cattle and sheep all out now and the remaining land all down to silage, there is nowhere else to go. I’m beginning to think I need to give Jack another tractor job to do and get the tanker out to water an area of the field for us. On the other hand, I think our neighbours might decide we have finally gone totally bonkers.

With a couple of weeks between events at the beginning of the month and the horses due for a dental check, we organised for vet Aimi Duff to give them the once over. This was just a routine check and we found nothing but a few sharp edges which were expertly ground down, so now everyone has perfect teeth again and no one has an excuse for anything other than perfect rein contact! Next on the list of priorities was a physiotherapy check for Taboo. With Georgina’s exams well under way and Taboo being well on his way to being fit to compete by mid June, it was good timing, so a visit from Andrea Bainbridge ensued. After an ‘Andrea treatment’ to release a couple of tight areas, Taboo is feeling more of a spring in his step and is heading to Belsay for a run in the BE100 to get going again.

Our Pony Club ODE always falls early in the season, this year, very early! This is the first time we have not actually taken part in the competition but with exams in full swing for Jack too, it wasn’t the right time. So with last year’s Trophies to return, I went off to dressage judge a couple of classes there and had a very pleasant morning seeing the younger members

tackle their tests in great style. It’s always enjoyable to see lovely ponies helping their riders through what is often their very first test and of course the others – the naughty ponies who’d definitely rather not be between the white boards, frustrating their little riders who are trying ever so hard to do what the test sheet said. It was a wonderful day with some great successes and hopefully gave our future riders the inspiration to achieve greater things. With judging finished, it was back home to get Joe ready for a trip up to compete at Floors Castle. It was a very early start next
