EquiSal Tapeworm validation paper published

Austin Davis Biologics has confirmed that the EquiSal Tapeworm validation paper has been published online by peer reviewed journal, Veterinary Clinical Pathology.

The small, family-run diagnostic and life sciences business Austin Davis Biologics provides the EquiSal Tapeworm testing service, which detects tapeworm-specific antibodies in horse saliva to provide a tapeworm burden diagnosis of low, borderline or moderate/ high. Results are used to enable targeted worming for tapeworm burden control. The test has been fully validated and shown to be accurate using samples from horses examined post mortem, when tapeworms were counted. This validation is detailed in the published research paper along with a comparison to the tapeworm blood test. Publication in a peer reviewed journal demonstrates quality of science, reliability of the

findings and that the research is of an accepted standard.

Users of the diagnostic service simply send saliva samples back to the Austin Davis Biologics laboratory where scientists use automatic liquid handling equipment to carry out the testing. Results are either reported directly to the horse owner or through stockists of the saliva collection kits.

Dr Corrine Austin, director of Austin Davis Biologics, commented, “We are very committed to researching helminth [worm] infections in horses, together with appropriate diagnostic approaches. We are currently researching various aspects of tapeworm infections and in collaboration with other research groups, we are investigating encysted redworm diagnostics as well as the role of oribatid mites in tapeworm infection.”

Summer healthcare

As summer seems to have finally arrived, keeping your horse healthy means paying attention to his environment and management. Robinson Animal Healthcare outlines some of the key considerations in a handy guide you can cut out and keep: • Always make sure your horse has a fresh, clean supply of water in the stable or field to avoid dehydration.

• In warm weather you may need to add electrolytes to the diet to replace those lost through sweating.

• Make sure your horse always has access to shade on hot days.

• Hooves often become dry and brittle in hot weather, ask your farrier for advice.

• Avoid sunburn by protecting exposed areas of pink and white skin from the sun with a suitable hypo allergenic

waterproof sunblock cream. Sunburnt skin can soon become sore and infected.

• Ensure protection from flies by using a suitable fly repellent, fly fringe and fly rug.

• Remove dry sweat from the coat as it attracts flies - use a mild anti-bacterial cleansing wash.

• Remove dirt or debris from eyes to help deter flies – bathe the eyes using cotton wool and warm water that was previously boiled and left to cool.

• Remain vigilant for seasonal conditions such as laminitis and sweet itch.

• Exercise your horse during the coolest part of the day.

• Be prepared for minor cuts and injuries by having access to a suitable first aid kit.
