You need a generous helping of elbow grease to bath thoroughly

Clean and drying whilst sunbathing - and already showing that enviable show ring gleam

The final ingredient when bathing is a good bit of elbow grease. Really get stuck in as it is so important that your pony is clean. As most Natives are born muck magnets, a rug and hood the night before the show are a great way to maintain the cleanliness overnight.

Tack Tack should be clean and fitted well. The selection of tack is a great tool towards complimenting features of your pony and also disguising weaknesses. Examples include using a heavier bridle on a pony with a plainer head and

a lighter bridle for a pony with a neat head. The tack should all match and look like it is able to be adjusted. All tack when showing a native should be plain, black or brown in colour with no bling or fanciness. A simple sheepskin numnah in a colour similar to the saddle should be used. If possible, you want a saddle that doesn’t cover the pony’s shoulder so as to show off its front better. Similarly if your pony is long in the back, a fluffy sheepskin can cover this up slightly. When showing in hand, it is expected that youngsters and broodmares are shown in a rope halter and all other adults are bridled. Stallions and colts are a wholly different ball game, with some breeds like the Highland shown in harness, whilst others are not. All entires over the age of two should be bitted. Again with tack, check your breed society website as they do detail what is expected in the ring.

Choose a bridle to complement your pony’s head

Show day Upon arrival at a show, it is important to turn your pony out to the best of your ability. In the ring you are aiming for perfection and a pony that is produced well will often come up the line over a pony with bad turnout. General cleanliness is the first thing you are looking to achieve. start with removing any stains (inevitable with a grey) and grooming the dust out of the coat. Next I pick the feet out and oil the hooves. Hoof oil should be used to give the feet a shine but paint or varnish should never be used on a Native. We then brush the mane, tail and feather out with mane and tail spray before backcombing the feather with hair spray to add volume. Promoting a good shine and lustre to the coat and hair can be

achieved by using a coat gloss and high shine spray. We use the gloss with cactus cloth so that the coat lies smooth and flat. With any Native, make up should not be used, however a small amount of oil around the eyes and nostrils can help towards making these stand out. Oil with UV protection can be sourced these days and prevents the sun from burning the skin on the occasional sunny day. Turnout of the handler or rider should be plain and simple. Blue Chip’s new Super Concentrated ULSA-COOL Balancer is the first feed balancer specifically formulated to assist with maintenance of acid balance in the gut, which is particularly important in show horses where studies have shown up to 60% may suffer from Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome. The 100% natural, whole-cereal, molasses free formula incorporates AcidBalTM, an acid buffering agent comprised of Lithothamnion, which is derived from marine minerals and can help to alter gut pH balance by slowly releasing calcium, magnesium and silicon, over a prolonged period to enhance the buffering effect it has on stomach acids. Also included are Beta- Glucans; natural polysaccharides that support the immune response and coat the lining of the stomach with a protective lining whilst slowing the passage of feed to keep the stomach fuller for longer. ULSA-COOL contains specifically tailored levels of all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your horse requires on a daily basis, as well as probiotics for efficient digestion, dedicated hoof and respiratory supplements and soya and linseed oils to ensure a glossy, gleaming coat.

Priced at £24.95 per 3kg tub, Blue Chip’s new Super-Concentrated ULSA-COOL Balancer promotes health and well-being from the inside out. For more information, telephone 0114 266 6200 or visit www.bluechipfeed.com
