Backcombing the feather with hair spray adds volume.
Hoof oil gives the feet a shine, but paint or varnish should never be used on a Native.
the colour of your pony, with a shirt and tie to match is all that is required. Those planning to ride will wear a hard hat, however those showing in hand should wear a hat too; this could be anything from a flat cap and should be something that compliments your outfit. Trousers should be chosen so as not to clash with your pony’s legs. If you have a horse with dark legs, wear light/chino coloured trousers and vice versa. This is so that when you are trotting your pony, your legs and the pony’s legs are easily differentiated. Ladies could also wear a tweed skirt or similar if preferred. Good flat boots are essential for trotting the pony up - I can vividly remember a lady in heels trying to run and ending up on her backside; amusing for the rest of us but not for the handler in question. Riders should wear beige/yellow breaches and long leather boots in large breed classes, and in small breeds classes, jodhpurs with jodhpur boots are etiquette. Hair should be neatly tied back or in a bun with no piercings on show – men included!! Smart and traditional is the look you are aiming for. I always find it advisable to arrive in plenty of time to familiarise yourself with the showground. Know where you need to be at what time, as a relaxed look is more appealing than a stressed and hurried one. If there are classes in the ring before yours, watch and see how long the go round is, which parts of the ring the judge is watching, where the ponies are lined up and if the show being used is set
by the judge. When it is your turn to enter the ring, relax and give yourself plenty of space. It is your time to shine in that ring and it is important to keep focused on what’s around you and where the judge is looking. Follow any instructions clearly and professionally and always remember to be polite and smile. At the end of the day, in most cases, yours will be the pony who you want to take home, so be the owner who your pony would like to return back with too. If the individual show in your class is a freestyle, play on your strengths and cover up your flaws. If your pony has a great trot, show this pace off more, whereas if he is neat with his canter transitions, perform them on a straight line or a simple change to show off your handy work. It is only basic schooling that is expected, so your pony should work in a free, forward and happy outline and your show should not take too long. While you shouldn’t carry out too many movements, it is however important not to hurry them. When you receive your placing, be it at the top or bottom of the line, remember to maintain politeness. You don’t know who is watching or when you’ll next come across that particular judge. Think about what you could improve for next time, even if you are the winner, as there is always room for improvement. In that context, when you begin with any pony, it’s always important to look at it through the eyes of the judge - which bits are its strengths and which bits could be improved? Conformation faults cannot be changed, but can be disguised with help or training and knowledge of the art of showmanship. Ask for help, learn and most of all enjoy.
