LETTER FROM THE BY LAURA SHELTON, CMP

Gearing Up for 2016 W

e are now coming into the time of season changes (at least for those of us not in California!). I personally love these season changes and what they bring— new energies, new wardrobes, and new activities during free time. Change

should be embraced and enjoyed, but for many it is feared. Within our industry we are at the crux of many upcoming changes. Electronic CCFs,

oral fluids testing in federal testing, hair testing in federal testing—OH MY! Add to that the continuing movement to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana and it is enough to cause many to want to cover their eyes and ears and scream “NOOOOO!!!!” Tese changes, however, are happening and many are going to be very beneficial to the industry in the future. Te good thing is that the industry has a “heads up” and can start preparing for the changes. Te third quarter is generally the time that businesses finalize their goals for the coming year and what changes will therefore need to be made in terms of standard operating procedures, services and products offered, staffing needs, office equipment needs, budgetary requirements, etc. What’s very interesting about this issue of DATIA focus is that so many of the articles

in this issue can assist you in that preparation for the coming year. Tis issue contains articles on the proposed oral fluids testing guidelines, business strategy development, focusing on the basics, and many more. No mater what your goals are for your business in the coming year you will be sure to find some from the articles within this issue. As for DATIA, we have been paying close atention to our annual member survey. As

in years past the top two needs of members have been reported as education/training and working on federal regulations and legislation. I am pleased to report that we are heavily working on both. Tree new courses will be debuted prior to the 2016 annual conference, new reference materials for collection sites and TPAs are in their final stages, and we are working to ensure that DATIA’s membership is educated and informed about the upcoming eCCF approvals, oral fluids testing standards, and the progress made on hair testing standards. Te cool winds of fall are just starting to occur and already we are feeling energized

to take DATIA to new levels in 2016. Given the commitment that our members have to their companies, their clients, and their industry we are sure that you are right there with us on planning for 2016 and hope that you are able to benefit from this issue’s articles in that process. 

Best,

Laura Shelton, CMP DATIA Executive Director

CORRECTION: On page 4 of the Summer 2015 edition of DATIA focus, it was wrongly noted that Advanced Screening of Florida immediately donated to the Marijuana Education Outreach Fund. The correct name of the company is Advance Screening. We regret this error.
