the actual time a donor reports back to the worksite. Since oral fluid collection does not have the same privacy concerns as urine collection, onsite collections are likely, thereby reducing the time a donor is away from the worksite. Savings—“Using OPM’s estimate for the average annual salary of federal employees converted to an hourly wage, the savings generated for the Federal Government would be roughly $400,000 to $1.2 million a year, or $38 to $114 per test.”

Conclusion All drug testing methods, when done right, work. Tey work at identifying individuals who need help and at deterring some

people from using drugs in the first place. Nowadays with a variety of drug testing methods available, it is not a question of which drug testing method is best but rather which one is best for Company A vs. Company B. And increasingly, it’s becoming more and more a question of which two methods together are best for a particular company—merging oral fluid and urine testing, for example, into a single program to give an employer the best possible opportunity of achieving its drug testing objectives. SAMHSA’s Oral Fluid Mandatory

Guidelines, once finalized, will establish much needed best-practice standards for lab-based oral fluid testing. And while the final version of the guidelines will initially only apply to federal agencies,

they will undoubtedly impact other federally mandated drug testing programs as well as state drug testing laws. For these reasons, it is important for all drug testing providers and employers that conduct drug testing to become familiar with the proposed guidelines and the potential benefits of lab-based oral fluid testing as articulated by SAMHSA. 
