are greatly enhanced by other respiratory depressants, such as benzodiazepines. Te majority of a single dose will be
eliminated in urine within 24 hours, but a detection window of up to 6 days has been established for minor drug metabolites. Analysis for this mystery drug is not included in standard drug testing panels, and its rapid metabolism may pose as an analytical challenge during drug testing. Our drug, or its respective metabolites, is not readily detected by routine immunoassays. Consequently, both screening and confirmation testing is commonly achieved using specialized gas- and liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS and LC/MS) or tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS and LC/MS/MS) approaches.
Nicknames for our mystery drug include “milk of amnesia” or “milk of anesthesia,” due to the milky appearance of the suspension and as a result of light dispersion of the oil droplets present. Our drug is available in 10 mg/mL doses for humans under the trade name Diprivan®, manufactured by Fresenius Kabi USA and Hospira, and for veterinary use as PropoFlo. While very well-known in the medical profession, the general public knew very litle about it until June 2009 when it was concluded that pop legend Michael Jackson died as a result of acute intoxication of our drug, although a combination of other sedative drugs were present. Despite this notoriety, our mystery drug is considered among some health care professionals as one of the greatest general anesthetics currently in clinical use.
What is it? Its common name is propofol.
