DART NOTES Dart Notes WHAT’S NEWS & WHAT’S NEW IN AND AROUND DARTMOUTH

DARTMOUTH GREEN PARTNERSHIPS 2015 ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY GOLD AWARD WINNING DARTMOUTH GREEN PARTNERSHIPS has an exciting summer ahead, planting displays to win the hearts and minds of both South West in Bloom and Britain in Bloom national judges. They will be holding their Flower Festival in Royal Avenue Gardens, Dartmouth on Saturday 2nd

May. Amongst

a variety of stalls there will be young plants for sale – a cheap and efficient way to prepare your hanging baskets. Together with SHDC, a new

feature is being created in the Royal Avenue Gardens - a Japanese garden, centred on a huge existing Monkey Puzzle tree. An ornamental bridge will cross a ‘river’ of interest- ing and varied plants. The gardens are to be entered for a Green Heritage Award this year. This award for municipal parks is run by English Heritage to promote the value of and best practice in the care and upkeep of historic sites. The old SHDC depot and our community greenhouse on the riverfront have been cleared to make way for some extra parking and an exciting new pyramid-shaped greenhouse is being planned for the area. It will be a wonderful feature and it is hoped it will become a Centre of Horticultural Excellence. DGP Chairman, Stevie Rogers,

DO NOT BE AFRAID DARTMOUTH ORCHESTRA is looking for new players to join them who would love to make music and have fun. If you used to play an instrument, in particular a violin, then get it out and play. You might well surprise yourself. Many of the orchestra’s players have at some stage

started playing again when life has allowed them the time to do so. None have stopped; instead they have remem- bered the joy making music gave them, which was the only encouragement needed to continue. The orchestra is fortunate enough to have some players

who has assisted SHDC on the design of the Japanese garden and plans for the new greenhouse said, ‘This is a positive move for the better use of the whole space. We are excited by the opportunities and challenges ahead.’ Other improvements include new lighting along the river front where there are fittings for 14 hanging baskets. These, together with more troughs, will extend the floral promenade. On September 24th

, Dartmouth

will host the South West in Bloom Awards for the first time at the Britannia Royal Naval College. This is a major event in the floral display competitions calendar attracting 300 people. TV presenter Jonathan Dimbleby

will do the presentation and Sue Gibbs, Royal Horticultural Society President, has been invited to attend. The night before there will be a Civic Dinner at the Guildhall for VIPs and mayors of South West towns. This will be a huge event for the town in terms of prestige and visitors. ‘We punch above our weight as a small town’, Stevie Rogers said. ‘It will get harder in the future as, with cutbacks, more community involvement will be needed to keep the town looking good all year round. We all need to help each other. Please get in touch with DGP if you can help through spon- sorship or by joining our work parties.’

who have made music their careers, yet they welcome all with open arms and the will for them to do well. Dartmouth Orchestra has been a community orchestra for the last fifteen years, so all are welcome. The Orchestra has a fabulous Music Director, Tony Hind-

ley, who is also their Conductor. Tony was a professional trumpet player and his musical knowledge and infectious enthusiasm makes rehearsing hard work but great fun. Due to his and others’ dedication, professional players often play as guests with the orchestra at concerts and enjoy doing so. In March this year, the Orchestra joined forces with the Bri- tannia Choral Society for a concert in a packed St Saviour’s church where the enraptured audience heard Mozart’s Coronation Mass. It was the first time the orchestra had played choral and orchestral works at the same time. With three orchestral concerts a year the orchestras repertoire
