THINGS TO DO 17 Berry Head

Brixham’s Berry Head has superb coastal walks and the chance to spot local wildlife, as well as Napoleonic forts and the highest, but shortest, lighthouse in Britain. A colony of rare Greater Horseshoe Bats lives there, as do various seabirds that nest in the cliffs and harbour porpoises, which dwell in the sea below. The visitor centre features displays about the headland, its wildlife and history. And in one of the forts is the lovely Guardhouse Café, which serves delicious cream teas. It’s dog friendly too! Or, for a long leisurely meal and drink, take a pew on the terrace of the stunning Berry Head Hotel with its spectacular views.

18 The National Theatre live at The Flavel

Live and direct from London’s South Bank, The Flavel screens National Theatre performances as they happen.

Highlights this summer include acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard’s highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem; Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes in an exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic Man and Superman; and BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (from 12 Years a Slave) in the title role of Everyman, one of English drama’s oldest plays. The Flavel also screens live productions from the Royal Opera House and Royal Shakespeare Company. See theflavel.org.uk for more details.
