HEALTH & BEAUTY

galvanises the others. You may have to wear wellingtons or a sailing jacket for practicality but that does not stop you adding a scarf or belt or blouse in a fashionable colour – BTW it’s salmon pink or pastel yellow for this coming season and both very difficult colours to wear so take it easy… As for skin care and make up it’s likely the same story.

Have you been wearing the same shade of lipstick for decades or used the same toner as a celebrity just because they advertise it and you believed the hype, even though it may be wrong for you? What your body and mind need changes all the time and

is different from even a year ago. As we age we have less of some things in our body and more of others. Hormone levels change resulting in drier or oiler skin, more or less trips to the loo (!), less collagen so less bounce to your skin, nails that won’t grow for love nor money or teeth that suddenly start acting up. All this can happen in any decade so don’t think just because you are twenty something this does not apply to you! It is not just an act of vanity to look carefully at yourself in the mirror. Your skin, eyes, hair and nails are a good barometer of what is happening on the inside. You may need to visit the optician/dentist/doctor more often to keep up with the changes. You may need to diet/exercise more/less to accommodate what is happening to your body. Keeping everything moving is vital. Take the stairs, carry your own bags, walk to the shops, take an exercise class and remember that walking uphill builds muscles and walking down hill builds bone. If you walk up and down the stairs it’s just as good for promoting bone growth as going outside and climbing hills so don’t worry if you are not keen on fresh air! Carrying too much weight can lead to a lot of things that

are well documented. Not carrying enough weight has its own set of problems. People who worry about being too thin are shouted down by their friends who only wish they were that thin. It’s not the paradise you imagine. Brittle bones, irregular heartbeat, fatigue and headaches

are all connected to being underweight. A lowered immune system can also be in play which will mean an endless round of coughs and colds that just will not shift. Being able to eat copious amounts of fatty foods and sugar while never exercising with no change to the outside could be doing untold damage on the inside with fat building up around the internal organs, blood sugar levels reaching dizzying heights and cholesterol not far behind. This is called ‘skinny fat’. If you are naturally thin take responsibility by eating well to take care of the inside. It is all about finding the balance while still having fun and

being true to yourself whether you are a lone wolf or a sheep. Happy Trails, Readers, Happy Trails.•
