his exhibition is to celebrate the pre release of Paul’s new instructional painting on watercolours, which is due out this June with an accompanying DVD. We will have the books and DVD’s available exclusively on Galleries Night for the first time. The paintings on display will be the originals featured in the new book.

Although many of the stunning works may seem beyond the capabilities of the novice painter initially, the ‘step by step’ demonstrations, information on brush control, techniques and ‘tools of the trade’ chapters help immensely. Paul’s extensive teaching experience is evident throughout the book and the paintings in the exhibition are prime examples of what is possible in this beautiful medium.
Paul has taught watercolour and oil painting from his residential art studios at Coombe Farm Studios near Dittisham for the last 30 years. He has written 3 previous books on watercolour painting and numerous articles for painting magazines.
In 1960 Paul had a painting accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. At this time he was the youngest ever exhibitor and the resulting media attention was both beneficial and detrimental. After leaving

Kingston Art school Paul’s artistic inspiration was drawn from social realism and he left Richmond to paint the mining communities of South Wales.
Arriving in Devon in 1979 after living exclusively in urban environments Paul was immediately inspired by nature in all its forms as well as the beautiful River Dart. At the same time he was asked to teach in watercolour, a medium he had not used since his school days. Finding this such a challenging and exciting medium he has sought to push the boundaries of the traditional watercolour with an intensity of colour and fluid brush handling. Flowers with their transparency and individual character are a constant inspiration and have become the subject for which Paul is best known.
