Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, Principal of RGU said, “These promotions reflect the very considerable contribution that our colleagues have made to the university, each in their own way.”

UNDERGRADUATE PLACEMENTS NES Pharmacy currently offer research placements and educational experience placements for Pharmacy undergraduate students from the Schools of Pharmacy.

The two types of placements are generally of two weeks duration in July, August and September. They involve the students carrying out part of a research project with staff within the Pharmacy Directorate or gaining educational experience with members of the team.

Students generally develop abstracts and posters for submission to conferences and educational events.

The application form for a research placement or an educational placement for Summer 2015 will be available in March 2015. Interviews will be held in mid June 2015.

44 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST

Pharmacy respond to Assisted Suicide Bill

Earlier this month, the Pharmaceutical Society gave evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Health & Sport Committee’s stage 1 scrutiny of the Assisted Suicide (Scotland) Bill.

The bill proposes to legalise the assisting of suicide although, as pointed out by legal experts during the evidence session, the current drafting falls short of defining what ‘assisting’ encompasses.

While the RPS has maintained neutrality it has developed policy outlining what would be required for the pharmacy profession, should the legislation be passed by the Scottish Parliament.

Aileen Bryson MRPharmS, Practice & Policy Lead, said, “We represent

members with a wide range of views on the subject, but even among those who would be willing to dispense a prescription, should the legislation be passed, a conscience clause was an absolute must in order to protect everyone involved. We would advocate a conscience clause to be in statute rather than in professional guidance.

“Part of the reason for developing our policy, which we also submitted to the committee with our response, was to examine what the practicalities for the profession would be if the legislation were to be passed.

“Having looked at all the possibilities, we suggested a framework in which there would be a triangular agreement between the medical practitioner, the pharmacist and the facilitator. We have recommended that the establishment of a multidisciplinary professional advisory panel to be written into statute; the details of that could be set out in subsequent regulations, but the panel would be able to establish suitable national guidance and protocols for all involved.”
