LIVERPOOL / WIRRAL Charity Matters
We take a look at two charities, Claire House Children’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support, to see how your fundraising efforts are essential in allowing them to continue their work ...
THERE ARE myriad reasons to run for charity - the focus it gives you during train- ing; the assistance the charity provides in the lead-up to the event; plus the determination it instils to ensure you make it over the finish line. All of these, plus the buzz you get from meeting - or surpassing - your fundraising target, makes running for charity a worth- while and exciting journey. But what occurs post-event? When you’ve completed the race, devoured your cheat meal and posted your finishers’ pic across social media? How does the charity put to use the funds you raised from all those hours of training and the final gruelling miles at your race? This year, Chevonne Mackay decided to take part in BTR Liverpool Half Marathon for
her local charity, Claire House Children’s Hospice. Chevonne and her training partner Helen Bristow made the joint decision to fundraise for Claire House, setting a target of £350. As a parent, Chevonne knew of the work the hospice conducts and had come across other parents in the area who had used their services.
In the lead up to the half marathon, Chevonne said Claire House kept in regular contact, sending through a fundraising pack, a personalised vest and training informa- tion. Chevonne said this communication was maintained throughout, with a representa- tive from the hospice, Mark Pearson, calling Chevonne a couple of days before the race to provide some words of encouragement and to wish her luck.
