LIVERPOOL / WIRRAL It Ain’t Half Perfect

We take a look at how you can make sure your Vitality Liverpool Half Marathon experience is as close to race day perfection as possible ...

BE PREPARED l Train smart, not hard

In order to have a good race, you need to have put in the groundwork - a proper train- ing schedule is key and can be the difference between enjoying the race and loathing every minute! Check out

northernrunningguide.com’s half marathon training plan here. You are likely to hear the refrain ‘train smart, not hard’. It’s not just about increasing the mileage. Instead of trying to cram in lots of long runs each week, use your time effectively by concentrating on the types of runs that will benefit you the most. l Know the route

It is worth checking out the race route in ad- vance - so you can visualise the course and know what to expect. You can also tailor your training accordingly.

It’s also handy to know

l The Night Before Look after yourself. Have a carbohydrate laden meal and plenty of fluid, take care not to eat anything new (at this stage it’s best to stick to what you know) and don’t eat too late. Have an early night and adopt some positive thinking. Don’t forget to pin on your race number the night before, as you may not be able to open those fiddly safety pins on race morning.

THE BIG DAY l Off to a great start Wake up nice and early, have a shower then chow down on a power breakfast - porridge or wholemeal toast and peanut butter are both

exactly where the start is; it saves frantic mo- ments on race-day morning when you are strug- gling to locate the start line.

BE MOTIVATED l Run for Charity It’s not just a good training plan that keeps you on the road and makes sure you ‘get in the miles’ in the lead up to the big day. Running for a good cause can have a similar effect as you feel continually motivated by the knowledge that what you are doing is helping others.

RACE DAY BUILD-UP l The Week Before

Make sure you have a plan in place - how you are getting to the race start - who is coming with you, where you will meet once you have crossed the finish line. You might also want to find out where your supporters will be stationed to cheer you on. Knowing that someone is ‘just round the corner’ with a whoop of encouragement is a great boost.
