THE BIG EVENTS LIVERPOOL / WIRRAL RUN FOR THE 96 5K - SUNDAY 19 APRIL

The Run To Remember

Run For The 96 is a 5k with a difference - we tell you why ...

LIVERPOOL HAS a new event for spring 2015. And it’s a very special one which remembers the 96 Liverpool football fans who died at Hillsborough in 1989. The Run For The 96 5K is a partnership involving Dom Williams and the team behind the now- established Hillsborough-Anfield Run, and BTR Liverpool.

The inaugural event is scheduled for Sunday, 19 April, and it is hoped that a host of local celebrities including ex-Spice Girl Melanie C will join runners for a 5K that is set to become one of Merseyside’s top sporting occasions. Run For The 96 5K is being staged in Stanley Park, close to the home of both Liverpool and Everton football grounds and is expected to attract big crowds of spectators wanting to encourage family and friends taking part in the event. The route also passes Hillsborough Memorial Eternal Flame on Anfield Road.

The event has been created by Dom Williams, who launched the Hillsborough- Anfield Run, an annual challenge which involves small team of runners from across the country come together to complete 96 miles over three days between Sheffield and Liverpool.

Dom now feels the time is right to create a community legacy run in Liverpool, to complement the Hillsborough-

Anfield Run. Dom has been working with BTR Liverpool since early 2014 to develop and deliver a community legacy event in memory of the 96 Liverpool football fans lost in the Hillsborough tragedy. BTR Liverpool’s Alan Rothwell said:

“We’re billing this as A Day To Remember - the goal is that the Run For The 96 5K will give people the opportunity to get involved with a community-based initiative, encouraging first time or new runners to take up the challenge. The event is also likely to attract families and, of course, support from the city’s Red and Blue football communities. The run also has the support of the Hillsborough Family Support Group. “Participants are invited to support and fundraise for the event’s two official charities, the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community. There is always a huge amount of positive energy when runners come together and support good causes and this neatly complements the organisers’ commitment to ensuring that local communities benefit from the legacy run.” Mark Sunday, 19 April 2015 in your diary now and make sure you are part of something special on what is certain to be a big day! All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and a T-shirt which they will be sure to wear with pride.
