MERSEY TUNNEL 10K - SUNDAY 7 JUNE THE BIG EVENTS

Decade Dawns For Tunnel 10K

Celebrating its 10th annual running in 2015, the last decade has seen the Mersey Tunnel 10K establish itself as one of the most unique races in the UK ...

A REVISED course, with new start and finish areas, was introduced in 2014’s Mersey Tunnel 10K and will again feature in 2015. Runners will head off from Blackstock Street in Liverpool city centre, before heading into the Kingsway Wallasey Tunnel. It makes for a gentle introduction to the race with the first mile downhill. Participants then run along the Wirral waterfront from Seacombe, past the Fort Perch Rock landmark and Marine Lake, completing the race in a new finish area on Ian Fraser Walk in New Brighton. Regular Mersey Tunnel 10K runner, Gillian

Laragione, says of the event: “Running inside the tunnel is an amazing experience. Lots of people ask me if it smells or is it claustrophobic. It’s neither of these things. There comes a moment during the race

when you take a look over your shoulder to see the Liverpool waterfront across the river. Amazing!”

The event brings together runners from both sides of the River Mersey as well as those from across the UK and from as far away as Malaysia, and the USA. Despite the cosmopolitan nature of entrants, those who take part speak of the event’s community feel, with runners known to spontaneously start chanting midway through the tunnel itself. A decade in the sun would be a slight exaggeration, but the weather has been kind to the Mersey Tunnel 10K in recent times, with participants being greeted by sunshine the last two years. Whatever the weather, demand for the event is growing each year with the 2015 race anticipated to attract over 3,250 runners. Register now to avoid disappointment!
