WIRRAL HALF MARATHON/10K SUNDAY 13 SEPTEMBER

Give It A Wirral

“Running, it keeps you young and fit!” Eddy Mountford enthused after finishing this year’s Wirral 10K. The 91-year-old rates the Wirral event as one of the best ...

AFTER BEING successfully introduced to the BTR race calendar in 2013, the Wirral Half Marathon & 10K continues to grow with 2,500 entrants this year and around 3,000 expected in 2015. The 2014 event saw entrants descending upon Wirral from as far away as Norway and Poland. In 2015, the races will take place on the revised date of 13 September - a slight change from its previous October outings. And that’s not the only change in store. Following the success of the Tour Of Merseyside, 2015 will see a similar Whistle Stop Tour of the Wirral, albeit on a smaller scale and covering 26 miles. BTR race director, Alan Rothwell, explained:

“The Tour will be centred around the Wirral Half Marathon, with races on the 11 and 12 September, in the lead up to the event. We’ll have a 5-mile, 8-mile and then a 13.1-mile event in the form of the Wirral Half Marathon, giving runners a combined mileage of 26 miles. “We received great feedback about the Tour Of Merseyside and are hoping for similar interest in this event. More details will be announced closer to the date.” The flat and fast, point-to-point Wirral

Half/10K course will have PB-seekers relishing the prospect of competing. Participants enjoy the scenic backdrop of Birkenhead Park in the first mile with a short hop through the docks and Four Bridges to the promenade at the Seacombe Ferry at three miles. The10K and half marathon runners race the first six miles together before the 10K contingent finish at New Brighton. The half marathon runners continue on along the coastal promenade to take in flat and fast second half of the course to then finish back in New Brighton. Last year’s half marathon was won by Tarus

Ely, 29, who completed the coastal course in 1:08:47 - a course record! In the women’s field, Jenny Clague successfully defended her title and improved on her time of last year by almost a minute, crossing the line in 1:22:58. See what we mean about the PB-potential?

Alan reflects on why the event has been such a success: “Wirral really does lend itself to hosting distance running events. The coastline is an ideal backdrop and enhances the overall experience for runners.” Don’t take Alan’s word for it, though, or even

Eddy’s. Come along next September to find out that not only does running keep you young and fit, it’s also great fun!
