MOTORING FORD FIESTA CONTINUED.........

with decent quality trim materials and a logical layout of dials and switchgear which helps easy driving. the centre-screen, which uses familiar mobile-phone style scrolling, is quite effective and less complex than most. Fiesta is quite roomy for occupants, even in the rear,

so it works well as a small family car. boot space is also very good . the style-spec test model has enough kit for many, though mid-range Zetec versions which add alloy wheels and other features are very appealing. If you want even more equipment, then the flagships Fiestas are loaded and top £19,000. Overall, its visual cachet, low running costs and brilliant driving feel hallmark the Fiesta and underline why it has been for a massive seller in the uK for almost 40 years.

VAUXHALL MOKKA

vauxhall’s mokka is a significant contender in the crowded compact suv sector, and its eye-catching styling and value for money specification has enabled it to make quite an impact. Available in two and four wheel drive, with petrol and diesel engines and four trim levels, prices start at £16,199. Its bold and slightly chunky look will appeal to traditional 4x4 type customers who are looking to downsize as well as first time buyers to the sector. there is a quality and durable feel throughout and

standard fare across the range includes such items as air conditioning, traction control, Abs, powered and heated door mirrors, cruise control, power front windows, steering wheel audio controls, 60/40 split folding rear seat and digital radio sound system. Available engines are two petrol units, a 1.4 litre turbo and naturally aspirated, 1.6 litre, plus a 1.7 litre turbo diesel. transmissions are 5 and 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with four-wheel-drive offered on the 1.4 litre turbo petrol and the diesel. the turbo charged petrol engine is just 1.4 litres

but offers very good performance with smooth power delivery and a slick gear change. It’s a refined engine too and the 6 ratios from the manual gearbox are well chosen to exploit the engine’s power delivery. steering is decently sharp and gives good feedback.

the suspension does a decent job of ironing out the roughest roads and the mokka displays little in the way of body roll even on twisting cross-country routes. seating is supportive and comfortable with a range of adjustment ensuring most drivers should find a good driving position. the interior itself is a nice place to be with a style and switchgear familiar from the

Astra and Insignia. All-wheel-drive can be specified with the 1.4 turbo petrol engine I drove and what will be the more popular 1.7 litre cDti turbo diesel. Add in clean technology such as stop/ start helps reduce emissions down to 120 g/km on the manually geared diesel engine. my 1.4 litre petrol turbo offers a 9.4 second sprint to the benchmark 60 mph with a top speed of 118mph. the mokka is an impressive model in many respects

from its sophisticated yet rugged style through to a durable, quality feel. my top-line se petrol turbo was a delight (£23,124) but common sense suggests that the 1.7 litre turbo diesel would be the one for economy and running costs.
