bridget christie (from r4’s bridget christie minds the Gap, Dilemma, Heresy, News Quiz, the unbelievable truth, bbc’s HIGNFY, QI, It’s Kevin and c4’s cardinal burns) does not wear her feminism lightly. she wears it heavily, like a suit of armour. It’s night time on Dartmoor and a cold wind whistles through the bracken and gorse, making them sing. Deep in his castle, the story Giant is dying. through the centuries he has gathered all the tales in existence. All that is, except one. tonight his very life relies on finding it. exploring folklore, myth and fairytale from around the world, join shanty theatre company as we meet ghosts, talking skulls, monsters, thieves, tricksters, dragons, and homing chickens in an adventure to find the last story on earth. Adapted from the book by legendary Liverpool poet brian Patten, this really is a family production, to be enjoyed by anyone of seven years and older!

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE: LIVE TO SCREEN – MANON October @ 7.15pm

LESCAUT Thurs 16th

manon Lescaut is a beautiful young woman who falls prey to the moral corruption of 18th-century Paris. Kenneth macmillan brings manon’s story vividly to life with his ballet, which evokes the brutality and decadence described in Abbé Prévost’s infamous novel, as well as the feckless character of manon herself – torn between love for the poet Des Grieux and her desire for money and attention. At the ballet’s heart are the duets macmillan created for manon and Des Grieux, which are among the most emotionally intense and erotically charged ever choreographed.

BLUES NIGHT WITH RICK & STEVE PAYNE Fri 17th

October @ 8pm

rick Payne and steve Payne return to the Flavel for an evening of acoustic roots and blues music. Heralded as two of the best acoustic players in the uK, rick and steve are not related but share a passion for guitar as well as a surname. tonight’s performance at the Flavel will coincide with the release of their long awaited joint cD which features a mix of original folk and blues plus some long standing favourites. Often compared with ry cooder, slide guitar maestro rick Payne’ is variously described as one of the uK’s most unique and versatile guitarists, a musical life’s worth of troubadour globe-trotting has resulted in steve perfecting his particular succinct, and at times very tongue-in-cheek, live ‘in concert’ experience. Individually they are wizards on the guitar; together they are totally spell binding. Not to be missed!

DAVID KNOPFLER Sat 18th

October @ 8pm

Guitarist, singer-songwriter, poet and founder member of 70’s rock band ‘Dire straits’. David spent three years with Dire straits before embarking upon a solo career as a rock jazz recording artist. David continues to tour – us, canada, spain, Germany and the uK and the first ever limited edition live album, made in Germany, was released in April 2013.
