DDT: Mid-Week Group

The good weather we have experienced this year has enabled us to complete most of our projects, the biggest undertaking being the renewal and refurbishment of the original timber benches located throughout the Laighhills. The late Billy Thom brought the need for this repair work to our attention and off ered to carry out the work himself. Sadly Billy passed away before he could make a start. Billy was a Dunblane lad who never left Dunblane apart from doing his national service. He was renowned for his drumming skills not only in Scotland with our traditional fi ddle and accordion bands but also south of the border where he played with some well-known big dance bands of the time. He often appeared on television as a session drummer with the White Heather Club. Billy is fondly remembered as the “Prince of Percussion”. The work has now been completed and plaques have been attached to each bench in memory of Billy.

Billy Thom’s daughter Jennie says “On behalf of my sisters, Shirley, Alison and myself, we would just like to thank the DDT for all their hard work in repairing the benches in the Laighills Park. We were all so very touched when we heard the story behind fi xing them and that they have been repaired in memory of our Dad. I think he would have been, as he would have put it, “Knocked out”.

To complement the gold letter box in the High Street we have replaced the adjoining bench seating with one with a carved inscription recording Andy Murray’s success. This was kindly donated by the garden furniture supplier Alexander-Rose.

We have continued to paint and maintain benches and railings throughout the town and were delighted when the head teacher of the Dunblane Primary School asked for our help in preparing the outer wall surfaces of the school for redecoration by another volunteer group.

We meet every Tuesday morning throughout the year from 09.30 to 12.30 with a coff ee break. From the beginning of November we start hanging Christmas lights on the shop fronts so they are operational in time for the High Street party. If you would like to join our little group get in touch with the Trust at our Braeport offi ce - you will be made most welcome. PS we give free training!
