Dunblane Primary School – Nursery Class
Creating ‘Bug Mansions’ Continuing to explore the forest and become aware of their environment and surroundings, Dunblane Nursery children are beginning to understand the importance of caring for living creatures by creating their own bug mansions.
The children work in their key groups, recalling the plants, trees and resources in the forest and discuss the best possible place to build the bug mansions and what materials to use. The group record their thoughts on a mind map with all children having the opportunity to record their ideas and thoughts. Moray – “We need to build it where we don’t walk” Ciaran – “We could use sticks and stuff ” They use existing knowledge of the forest and remember how important it is to use ‘dead’ wood and plants.
On arriving in the forest, the children recall as a group the diff erent steps needed to complete the task to build their bug mansions. On completion of the task the group have the opportunity to share, refl ect & evaluate their part in the task and on returning to Nursery do some initial drawings of the ‘bugs’ that may like to live in the Bug mansions they created. The group continue to explore and transfer their learning of mini-beasts, awareness of the environment and surroundings, and the importance of caring for living creatures by creating a bug house in the Nursery garden.
