Judy Murray Kicks Off City Team Tennis

Judy Murray came along to Bridge of Allan Sports Club on Sunday 14th September to encourage and inspire over 40 children who had arrived from nine cities throughout Scotland to play in the fi rst City Team Tennis event.

The day started with a warm-up from Judy Murray which inspired the children to play their best tennis for their city and most importantly enjoy the day! Judy said “It was a Sunday Funday! So many children from all over Scotland enjoying themselves. This is a great event masterminded by Adam Brown.”

Brown was delighted to have Judy’s support, “It was great to have Judy along in the morning to do the warm up and off er some coaching advice to the kids. The kids were all mega excited, and all received a prize from Judy and a bit of her birthday cake which she brought along”.

The children played both singles and doubles and there were some exciting, close contests throughout the day. The Stirling team fi nished a creditable fourth. Strathgryff e were the eventual winners. Coached by Derek Brown, they were delighted with their result, “We’ve had a great day. Judy was a great inspiration to start the day and we’ve had some really close and exciting matches. Thanks to Bridge of Allan Sports Club for hosting us and we are delighted to come away with a win at the fi rst City Team Tennis Event!”

City Team Tennis is the brainchild of Central District Coach, Adam Brown. It involves teams of 4 children, aged 9 and under, from the cities of Inverness, Glasgow, Dundee, Stirling, Aberdeen, Prestwick, Strathgryff e and Carlisle. They will all come together to play against each other throughout the winter to fi nd the best city in Scotland.

Brown commented “So much of competitive tennis especially from a young age is about singles, and being out on your own playing individual competitions. With this, brings the pressure on winning and losing and the stress on the individual and also the parent. And sometimes the children can start to lose the fun side of tennis. The City Team Tennis I have created gives children the opportunity to take part in a team event, like Davis Cup. There is singles and doubles and players get the real feeling of being part of a team. Players have their own team kit, and coaches are allowed on court at the change of ends to off er advice to the kids”.

This initiative is an addition to the local schools project that Brown has set up with sponsorship from FES, following Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win in 2013. This involves delivering tennis to over 1500 local schoolchildren at aff ordable prices and includes a Stirling Schools competition.
