DART NOTES
FIRST WORLD WAR TRIBUTE AT THE FLAVEL
P
eace has been a recurring theme of the powerful and distinctive singing and songwriting of Coope, Boyes and
Simpson, who are bringing their show In Flanders Fields to The Flavel in September as part of the Folk at the Flavel series. Barry Coope, Jim Boyes and Lester Simpson, who all hail from the North of England, are an internationally acclaimed a cappella trio who, as well as setting out to amuse and entertain, also use their musical talents to prick consciences and raise awareness. “Popular music is so bland and meaningless that I feel the need to sing more important songs to fill the void,” says Lester Simpson “and the good thing about folk music is that you can do that.” The trio have known each other since the 1970s and all are respected singers and musicians in their own right. Over the years they have been members of top folk groups such as Swan Arcade, Rogues Gallery and Ramsbottom, but it was at the suggestion of actor, singer and songwriter John Tams that Coope, Boyes and Simpson was formed in 1993. Among the causes closest to their hearts is keeping alive the
memory of those killed in the First World War and a number of years ago the group was commissioned by the Flemish town of Passchendaele to compose and perform music for a series of Peace Concerts. A number of these concerts took place on the sites of some of the bloodiest battles of the con- flict, and it was these experiences that inspired their produc- tion In Flanders Fields. The success of the show has also led to collaborations and performances with War Horse author
Michael Morpurgo in a musical story-telling production of his World War One children’s story ‘Private Peaceful’ and ‘The Best Christmas Present in the World’ about the Christmas Truce of 1914. In Flanders Fields, which takes its name from the poem
by John McCrae who was killed on the Western Front during 1916, brings together the biting humour of the Tommies’ observations, contemporary poetry and the trio’s specially commissioned songs. Coope, Boyes and Simpson present what is undoubtedly a fitting tribute to the many lives affected by one of our greatest human tragedies. Coope, Boyes and Simpson will be performing In Flanders Fields at The Flavel at 8pm on Saturday, 13th
September.
