It is an attractive package and while standard models start at £12,100, my supercharged test model was near the top end of the range, an Acenta Premium, laden with kit and priced at £15,395, and with pearlescent paintwork an extra £700. Standard equipment on this version includes auto lights and wipers, Bluetooth, climate control, four power windows, cruise control and speed limiter, CD/Radio and AUX input, stop-start system, sliding rear seat, front side and curtain airbags, remote entry and key-less start, daytime running lights, touch- screen navigation and 16 inch alloys. The latest Note has a sleeker profile than its rather square-backed predecessor, and does look a premium-level hatchback. Similar in size to the VW Golf, the Note may not have quite the same badge- cachet but does offer excellent driving dynamics. The acceleration is typical in the sector, 0-60mph in 11.7 seconds and the top speed of 112 mph means it is a good unstrained motorway cruiser. The steering is well-weighted, in fact a little heavier than most hatchbacks, giving it a very stable feel and the suspension set-up copes with bumpy roads with composure, yet is not over-firm. The 5-speed manual gearbox is slick and precise
and adds to the overall feeling of control and assurance. The Note’s cabin is well-built and functional,
though lacks any eye- catching styling details which might impress passengers. But occupants will like the amount of room available, even in the rear where head-room and leg space is better than in most rivals. Load space is also praise-worthy (or perhaps Note-worthy!) with 325 litres of boot, expandable to 411 litres by sliding the rear seat forward – a very useful feature.
THE LATEST NOTE HAS A SLEEKER PROFILE THAN ITS RATHER SQUARE-BACKED PREDECESSOR AND DOES LOOK A PREMIUM-LEVEL HATCHBACK.
