Computing How to Stay Safe Shopping Online

Heather Betts HELPS US STAY TECH SAVVY

These days, most of us shop online. The range of products available to us today was simply unthinkable 10 years ago. In 2013, online sales accounted for 21% of the total retail market. And we are all set to shop even more in 2014 using computers, tablets and smart phones. So how do you stay safe online? After all, you are handing over your credit card information and your personal data. Just as online sales rise year on year, so does online fraud. Here are a few tips. Look for the Padlock and Green Bar When you checkout online, look in the top address bar. With any safe, reputable site, you will see the address change to https:// and you should see a padlock. The address bar should also go green indicating that the site is encrypted. This indicates the website has proper security and you can input your personal and financial information with confidence. Bogus Websites Make sure that you are on a genuine site. Creative fraudsters can create dummy sites that look identical to the original. Always look in the address bar and check the site address. Be careful of emails that pretend to be from a company but are actually bogus. Clicking on a link in an email means you can be taken anywhere. You may think you are on a particular website but you could, in fact, be on a dummy site. Have a Good Internet Security Package There is no substitute for a good Internet Security Package. These add another layer of online protection

and often have built in tools. A good example is Bit Defender which manages online transactions. It creates a safe zone where you can enter your personal and financial information. Use a Credit Card The best way to protect yourself when you are making payments online is to use your credit card. If the item or service is worth more than £100 then you will be protected by the Consumer Credit Act, which means that the credit card company will be liable for any defects. Always print out a receipt. Apply Common Sense! Be sure that the sites you visit are reputable. If you are suspicious or unsure about the security of a site, then terminate the transaction. Although fraud is on the rise, genuine retailers are committed to providing safe websites with high levels of security.
