DARTMOUTH STEAM RAILWAY 150TH


YEAR CELEBRATIONS 2014 marks the 150th (Sesquicentennial) anniversary of the opening of the Paignton-Kingswear section of the railway line. The Dartmouth Steam


Railway is marking the anniversary with a series of events. Celebrations will take place in conjunction with the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust


(http://www.discoverhannahs.org) - a wonderful local charity. The Trust is dedicated to empowering, encouraging and enhancing the lives of children, young people and adults with a range of disabilities.


August 10th


“DRIVER FOR A TENNER” For the first time ever, you can drive a steam train for a nominal ticket price of just £10. Under the watchful eye of professional staff you will take control of a steam locomotive so come and fulfill a childhood dream and join the exclusive club of steam train drivers on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.


August 11th , 12th , 15th


“DRIVER FOR A FIVER” Again, another once in a lifetime chance to drive one their diesel shunters on the iconic Dartmouth Steam Railway. This will take place within station limits at Kingswear station. ‘Driver for a Tenner and Fiver’ are both available 11:00-14:30. Pre-booking is essential as places are strictly limited.


August 12th - 17th


: A trackside I-Spy competition. Spot the connections to the line and places of interest from the window of the train. Daily draw of correct entries for a prize (two age groups - aged up to 5 and aged 6-11).


JUST FOR KIDS A Pavement Painting competition for children at Kingswear Station (with a steam railway theme of course!). Chalk is provided and the best picture each day wins a fantastic prize (two age groups - aged up to 5 and aged 6-11). Free goody bags for all children that ride on the Paignton-Kingswear steam train (aged 1-5) on the actual anniversary day itself - Saturday 16th 15th


August -17th


August 14th CANDLELIT WALK THROUGH


GREENWAY TUNNEL Take the evening train from Paignton departing at 18:15, alight at Greenway Halt and enjoy a supervised walk through the 495yd tunnel. Watch out for the haunted spirits of those that lost their lives during its construction!! On the other side of the tunnel you join the train again (embarkation will be via ladder) for the remainder of the journey to Kingswear (departure at approximately 19:50).


The return steam train journey will leave Kingswear again at 20:15 for the return trip back to Paignton. Pre-booking is essential as numbers will be strictly limited. This truly unique experience will be limited to 150 people and a supplemental £1.50 fare will be donated to the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust (in addition to the usual ticket price).


August 15th GUIDED TOURS OF THE WORKSHOP


AT CHURSTON Guided tours of the workshop at Churston. 30-minute tours at 11:00, 11:45, 12:30 and 13:15. The tours are free but there will be a retiring collection with all donations in aid of the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust. Strict limit of 50 persons per tour and places allocated on a first come first served basis.


August 15th - 17th


BEER FESTIVAL Twenty five locally sourced beers, ales and ciders. From 12:00 to 17:00 on Friday 15th and Sunday 17th and 12:00 - 23:00 on Saturday 16th. £6 entrance fee gives you 3 x ½ pint tokens and a 150th


anniversary commemorative pint glass as a


keepsake (valid 12:00 - 17:00 on any of the three days) - a £10 entrance fee gives you 5 x ½ pint tokens and commemorative pint (valid 12:00 - 23:00 on Saturday 16th only).


August 16th


ANNIVERSARY DAY Saturday 16th is the actual anniversary day when the line from Paignton to Kingswear first ran a steam train between the two towns. The beer festival will be in full swing with live music during the day and evening plus a BBQ. The paddle steamer Kingswear Castle will (on certain services during the day) ferry you across to Dartmouth as would have been the case some 150 years ago when the railway first opened!
