Welcome to this month’s Dart Habour bulletin

Rob Giles, Harbourmaster

Dart Harbour is once again delighted to be helping with the harbour aspects of the Port of DARTMOUTH ROYAL REGATTA 2014, with Dart Harbour staff on hand to promote a safe and timely series of events. This is probably the busiest week of our year on the water with an incredibly large number of vessels both underway and moored in the harbour. River users not involved in the Regatta are requested to keep clear of the organised waterborne events and exercise particular caution when underway in the River Dart during this period.

Some of the events require us to close certain parts of the river for short periods of time so we can maximise safety.

Notices to Mariners have been sent out so please do take heed of these areas and timings as failure to do so could result in an accident or an air display being cancelled which would

be very disappointing - if you are on the water, please respond to harbour staff instructions. Do use the river with caution; make sure to wear your kill cord – lifejackets are useless unless worn. In addition, Dart Harbour takes a dim view of excessive consumption of alcohol when driving boats and harbour staff are briefed to take action against transgressors.

Below are some of the main events taking place on the river.

SAILING EVENTS There will be a high volume of

ROWING EVENTS Both local rowing and West of England Amateur Rowing Association events will take place between Noss Marina and the Lower Ferry. Rowing events will have their own dedicated support and safety craft in attendance.

FIREWORK DISPLAYS There will be two firework displays taking place on Thursday 28th

from 9pm in the Bight and Saturday 30th

August

August from 9pm mid river opposite the Boat Float. An exclusion zone will be in force for both events with no vessels permitted in this area between 8.45pm and the end of the display on the appointed days. Harbour Authority vessels will be on patrol to keep this zone clear.

AERIAL DISPLAYS

sailing activity in and near the harbour during Regatta period. Regatta sailing events include dinghy sailing within the river at Dittisham and Kingswear, as well as yacht and day boat racing outside the river.

Currently 12 aircraft displays and one parachute drop into the river are scheduled during Regatta. An exclusion zone in the main channel between the higher and lower ferries will be in force for all displays and no vessels will be permitted in this area between ten minutes before the scheduled display start and the end of the display. Again Harbour Authority vessels will be on patrol to keep these zones clear.
