AROUND KINGSWEAR
WI LADIES The main recent event for the ladies was the regatta, taking a great deal of careful preparation. To serve hot drinks with lovely cakes in the middle of a field is not a simple business. Our ladies did a sterling job at keeping us all going, so many thanks to them all. I noticed some jam-and-cream scones left over, so what could a chap do?
The latest annual trip was to A La Ronde, near Exmouth. The National Trust property there is a bizarre yet fantastic 16-sided building, erected by the Parminter sisters in the eighteenth century and full of their eccentric collections of trinkets. What are the women up to next? In August they will be holding their annual garden party at the home of Jane Bolton where there will be Pimms, treats and a fierce competition for best garden ornament in the South Hams!
CREEKING-ON The latest bit of Kingswear to be restored is the
footpath by the creek – the splendid people from South Hams District Council Footpaths and Bridleways pulled out all the stops to get it re-opened in time. Thanks are due to our parish clerk Emma Illingworth and chairman Jonathan Hawkins for chasing down the right people! Malcolm Bovey from Kingswear Builders has now started on the final work on the renovations of the kiln and its forecourt area – a lovely place to come and sit in warm shelter. There is the proposed playground at the creek to consider. Tony Swainson, the spokesperson for the group proposing the idea, has sent me this statement: “A group of Kingswear parents and grandparents have put forward a proposal for a small playground for young children to be located in Jubilee Park. Everyone attending Kingswear Regatta was able to see an artist’s impression of the playground and importantly its suggested location within Jubilee Park. The proposers of the playground say it is sited away from residents, is small in size and will not spoil the enjoyment of others. Everyone present at the Regatta was given the opportunity to record their support or opposition to the proposal. The results showed that 181 people were
in favour with 10 in opposition.
PLAYGROUND I come hot-foot from a lengthy parish council meeting where Beacon Road was discussed. The Devon County Council official who was to address the meeting was unavailable, but stuff has been found out. The finance from the ‘Belwyn Fund’ which it was hoped would give us at least a temporary repair is not to be forthcoming, but there is the possibility of some financial help from The South West Coast Path Association. Esther Pearson from that group is looking into the possibility of applying for Lottery support. It seems that the financial burden of repairing the land-fall in Beacon Road could be shared, possibly three ways, amongst SHDC, the landowners and a Lottery bid. This is by no means certain yet but the chances of effecting a repair do seem better than they did. Expert opinion has been sought for the next parish council meeting on September 9th where it is to be discussed between 7:00pm and then the proposed playground for Jubilee Park is under consideration from 8:15 – 9:15pm. Everyone is of course welcome to come along to express their opinion on that night in the Trust Room.
MIRROR, MIRROR NOT ON THE WALL
A suggestion was made this week that a mirror be placed on the wall near the station, at the bottom of Church Hill. This could make the turn safer by reflecting on-coming traffic. However, it seems no council, county, district or parish will endorse the idea. There are issues of blinding reflections of car headlights, maintenance and public safety – a private individual may put up a mirror but a public body may not. Sorry about that!
DEFIBRILLATOR IN KINGSWEAR You never know when you might need one but an AED - Automatic External Defibrillator - is a life-saving device which can really make a difference when every second counts. In rural communities such as ours, ambulances and trained medical help are not so close to hand and, for victims of cardiac arrest, minutes can make the difference between life and death. Kingswear is now fundraising to purchase an AED fol-
lowing a recent incident at Fountain Violet Farm when a house guest suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest. The AED gives anyone, trained or untrained, the ability to deliver a life saving shock of electricity to a victim of car- diac arrest, restoring his or her heart’s normal rhythm. Start up donations have already been pledged by the Kingswear Regatta Fund and South Hams District Council and it is hoped that the target of £2,500 will be reached with the support of the local community. If you want to support this initiative or find out more please contact
kingsweardefib@gmail.com or contact Cat Bratten or Emma Jones via the Kingswear Post Office.
