CHAMBER CHAT with Neal Juster, Director, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce

BUSINESS Describe your role/job? I am Senior Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Glasgow. In addition to deputising for the Principal in his absence, my responsibilities are to lead the development and implementation of the University’s strategic plan; to lead the annual planning and budgeting cycle and to prioritise the capital plan so that it aligns with academic strategy.

What skills do you bring to the table/are required in your role? Knowledge of trends in, and forces acting on: the higher education sector; strategic planning; decision making; financial literacy; communication skills; and the ability to listen to, absorb and act on ideas

from staff as to how we can help the university achieve its ambitions.

What’s best about Glasgow Chamber of Commerce? Networking with the other members and understanding the range of businesses in Glasgow. Also, the Chamber has been excellent at ensuring that the economic, social and research contribution of the University to the city and Scotland is recognised by a wide audience.

What has been your career high point? Gaining a doctorate, being promoted to Professor, and being appointed as Vice-Principal at Glasgow all stick out in my memory. More recently, seeing the completion of the Translational Cancer Research Centre, a building

which should accelerate the discovery of new methods for prevention and treatment of cancer. I chaired the project board.

What one thing would you wish for Glasgow in the future? To be seen as a city with opportunities for all, from whatever background or age group. A city contributing to the success of Scotland, however you wish to measure success.

PERSONAL What do you do to relax? Ride a bike around the many cycle paths in the West of Scotland.

What is your favourite city outside the UK and why? San Francisco. Fantastic setting, places of interest, sports teams, home to some great universities, sunny and warm nearly all year.

Name your favourite book/ film/album? Book - Wild Swans by Jung Chang. Film - Blues Brothers. Album - Human League’s Dare.

What is your most embarrassing or humbling experience? When your children begin to be better than you at almost everything.

If you could host a dinner party with four guests, who would you choose (two living, two dead)?

William Wilberforce, Emmeline Pankhurst, Martha Lane Fox and Bob Geldof.
